About the SIJCC Vision

The SIJCC is a community where people come together to learn, where Jewish culture, spirituality and wisdom are honored, celebrated and preserved. We provide a gathering space that welcomes Jews, mixed-faith families and those interested in Jewish culture. Ever mindful of the diverse voices of our community, we offer thoughtful, innovative, and enriching programs that promote the values distinctive to the SIJCC.

The central focus of all SIJCC programming, including the preschool, is driven by Jewish values, culture and heritage. The philosophy of Tikkun Olam or “heal the world” is reflected in our curriculum, programming and operational policies. By encouraging our families to live a life of generosity, we hope to reach beyond the walls of the SIJCC, sharing our enthusiasm and kindness with the world. We believe that an atmosphere where children and adults are inspired to question, explore and share their knowledge is one in which creativity, tolerance, and learning will flourish.

History of the SIJCC

For the past 59 years the SIJCC has served the Jewish Community of the Silverlake Hollywood area. Built in 1951 with initial funds raised by local members, the responsibilities of running the center were eventually given over to the Jewish Community Centers of Greater Los Angeles (JCCGLA). In 2001, facing fiscal challenges, JCCGLA was no longer able to fund the center and it’s preschool. Unwilling to lose the heart of their community, the pre-school director, teachers and parents banded together, forming the non-profit Silverlake Independent Jewish Community Center. Their efforts and generous support from the Episcopal Church of Los Angeles ensured that the center could remain open. Funds to purchase the building from the JCCGLA were eventually raised. The efforts of the founding board of directors and its President, Janie Shulman ensured the preservation and growth of the SIJCC.
