At the Jewish Learning Center we set out to create an inclusive and innovative learning environment for children and their families. As we explore the flow of the Jewish year through music, food and culture we hope to build a foundation of knowledge of Jewish tradition, values and personal identity. We look forward to learning with your family!
The JLC mission is to:
- Create a community where families will engage in and celebrate Jewish life
- Act upon our tradition’s commitment to justice, both within our community & the greater world
- Engage in multi-generational learning and develop family rituals and connections that reflect our individual beliefs
- Understand the history of the Jewish people, and the influence it has on our present and future
- Form an experiential learning environment that stimulates all five senses
- Encourage an open environment for questioning, while exploring a variety of perspectives of the Jewish tradition
JLC Curricular Overview
Holidays, Mitzvot, Home and Community
Our foundational program for students in grades K-2 is focused on connecting to Jewish culture, exploring holiday traditions and building a community at the JLC. Through a variety of experiential activities students will become familiar with the flow of the Jewish year and the core values that make up our tradition.
Ethics (Pirkei Avot), History, and Literature
Our students in grades 3-5 build on their foundational knowledge as they delve into the history of our people. Students engage in a study of ethics and literature to build connections between the past and present of our tradition. Continued exploration of the Jewish year through a historical and ethical lens will deepen our students understanding of the holidays.
Lifecycle, Justice (Tikkun), Current Events and Leadership
Our grade 6-7 students explore models of leadership by building connections between Jewish values, current events and personal identity. An exploration of lifecycle events frames the b’nai mitzvah process, as students learn about the many rituals that surround Jewish life. Students will research and implement a justice project over the course of the two year curriculum. In addition to the core curriculum and group culmination, students will have the option of pursuing individual, customized b’nai mitzvah preparation.
