Book Club Gathering:

Finish the book…or read what you can…prior to meeting.

This new group will be molded by the folks who show up. If you want to partake but this date or time isn’t great for you, write EastSideJews@sijcc.net to let us know.

East Side Jews has started a book club!

Ben Poor and Shay Roman are two LA transplants who like to read and think and talk… especially about all things Jewish and Jewish Adjacent. They are always excited to dive into stories — particularly when that includes hanging out and having snacks or wine in hand. Whether you know them or not, you can be sure Shay and Ben will provide you with not only accountability for your lazy reading habits, but also quick and fun jibber jabber with a solid dose of critical thinking.  This is the biweekly dose of weeknight party-time that you didn’t know you were looking for.

You Can Expect: to meet new people, relax in casual vibes, partake in enjoyable arguments, be welcomed in queer-and-radical-friendly thinking, and become apart of a caring community space.

If book costs are prohibitive to you, please contact eastsidejews@sijcc.net for support!

The Rabbi Who Prayed With Fire

by Rachel Sharona Lewis

A mystery novel about a queer, community organizing rabbi, fighting for an alternative future for the Jewish community.

Book Description: “Congregation Beth Abraham expected their newest rabbi to "sing some songs and go to an environmental rally." But Vivian Green has other ideas. She wants her flock to engage meaningfully with their city-special mayoral elections, interfaith breakfasts, fights for affordable housing and all. Also, she would like just one night off to go dancing in the leather boots that make her look like her finest gay self.

Taking on the city's old boys' club is already proving difficult...but then Beth Abraham bursts into flames. Fingers get pointed, and everyone's biases rise to the surface. It turns out that wasn't the only fire burning in town.

Vivian sticks to her instincts, raising tensions with her boss, her community, and a certain hottie in a power suit. And she learns that knowing whodunnit is only half the battle.”
