The Eighth Night: Master Debater 2021

For the fifth year in a row, attendees of this event will be transported into a ridiculous, hilarious, and probably uncomfortable family living room by way of our 2021 event! Not your typical Chanukah party, Master Debater is a no holds barred show where two teams of Jews face off in three rounds of high school style debate. The teams, made up of shrewd comedians, witty rabbis, nerds, normies, and more, argue the most pressing issues of our tradition. Previous topics include: NY Jews vs. LA Jews, Plagues: Real or Fake, Circumcision: yay or nay, and many more. This year is extra special as we’ll be incorporating live musical elements, a giant menorah candle lighting, and special VIP cocktail hour!

2021 Freedom & Justice Seder: Matzah & Roses

Join East Side Jews as we reinterpret the “Meal of Moshiach”, end-of-Passover seder, and decide what our own communal liberation journey looks like. Pulling from history lessons, Passover stories, wise ancestors, and our favorite haggadot, we’ll honor where we’ve been, where we are now, and where we are going.

Political education? In a time like this? YES.

When the world is in chaos there is no better time to look at the successes and strategies of change-makers and movements that have come before us. Our people’s rich history is full of revolutionary ideas and actions, and of course some teachable failures. How much do you know about Jews in modern political struggle? Or in the American labor movement? Or during “Red Scare”? Find out more through communal learning and other exciting virtual resources that ESJAC is bringing to the East Side Jews & SIJCC community. This newly formed, constantly growing, radical minyan-ish group is excited to dive into research, essays, movies, and more, to explore the Jewish relationship to activism in modern political history. All ages and backgrounds are encouraged to join!

We meet monthly (usually) and never run out of things to say!

THIS WEEK:

Our conversation will be informed by a piece from Jewish Currents, written by Gabi Kirk:

"Authors of California Ethnic Studies Curriculum Decry Cuts to Arab Studies"

PLUS, we will be having a guest speaker…

Local activist, and all around amazing brilliant person Michal David will be sharing her experiences and efforts in supporting this important new curriculum.

Please read the article prior to this meeting, or just come excited to hear people discuss it!

ESJAC Presents: Defending Democracy #CountOnUs

As an extension of our Political Education offerings, the East Side Jews Activist Collective will be running an adapted GOTV and democracy defense training from #CountOnUS & Frontline democracy defenders. This training, based on the social view of people power, will highlight the stakes of this moment, breakdown the theory of non-cooperation, and make sure you know WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW. This workshop will prepare individuals to take action on November 3rd, and after: Whether that’s day-of-election text banking, pressuring your representatives, showing up to polling places to protect the ballot box, or participating in a general strike with millions of others to defend democracy.

Fill out our Interest Form and Register on Zoom TODAY!

Hosted by East Side Jews Activist Collective (ESJAC)

ESJ Poli Ed. Discussion: Anarchist Jews & High Holiday Riots

We’ll be discussing a piece from Tablet Mag, “The Festive Meal: When Yom Kippur was a time to eat, drink, and be merry” by Eddy Portnoy. Join us as we begin to discuss the decadent (and literally riotous) Yom Kippur balls of the past, and whether there’s anything we can learn today from these unique expressions of Judaism. ESJ will also be offering a Yom Kippur afternoon panel specifically about Yom Kippur balls of the past and present. To attend that workshop, please Register here for High Holiday related events with SIJCC.
